Network Engineer

You design, build, and maintain the networks that let computers talk to each other — internet, internal company networks, cloud connections. When the network breaks, everything breaks, and people look at you.

What Tuesday looks like

You start the day reviewing overnight alerts. A switch in a remote office flagged repeatedly between 2 and 4 a.m. — probably a flaky uplink. You open a ticket with the ISP and start documenting. At 10 you're in a planning meeting about migrating part of the network to a new cloud setup; lots of whiteboarding, lots of opinions, no decisions. After lunch you SSH into a few routers to push a configuration change you tested last week. One device doesn't take the change cleanly and you spend 40 minutes figuring out why (a typo in a previous engineer's config). You update documentation nobody else will read. At 3:30 someone reports the VPN is slow for the sales team — you trace it through firewall logs and find a misrouted subnet. Quick fix. You leave at 5:30. You're on-call this week, so your phone stays loud.

The first years

Year 1–2: Help Desk or NOC Analyst

You're probably not called a network engineer yet. You're answering tickets — password resets, VPN issues, 'the wifi is slow.' If you're lucky, you land in a Network Operations Center watching dashboards and escalating real problems to senior engineers. Pay is $50K–$70K. You're studying for your CCNA on nights and weekends because without it, nobody takes you seriously.

Year 2–4: Junior Network Engineer

You've passed the CCNA and finally get to touch real gear. You're configuring switches, setting up VLANs, and shadowing senior engineers during maintenance windows that always happen at 11 p.m. on a Saturday. You break production at least once and learn what 'change management' actually means. Pay jumps to $75K–$95K. You start to understand that half the job is documentation and the other half is figuring out what someone before you did and why.

Year 4–5: The Fork in the Road

You're competent now. You can troubleshoot most issues without asking. But the field is splitting: traditional networking (routers, switches, firewalls) is stable but slow-growing, while cloud networking (AWS, Azure, SD-WAN, automation with Python) is where the money and the jobs are moving. You have to pick what to invest your study time in — and 'both' isn't really an option if you want to get good at either.

Decision point

Specialize in cloud and network automation (higher ceiling, steeper learning curve, more job security long-term as AI takes over routine config work) or stay in traditional infrastructure (stable, well-paid, but slowly shrinking as companies move to the cloud). Some engineers also branch into network security here, which pays more but means constant on-call and a different certification track.

Year 5–7: Mid-Level Network Engineer

You own projects now. You're designing the network for a new office, leading a firewall migration, or building automation scripts that replace work you used to do by hand. Pay is $100K–$130K depending on where you live and what you specialized in. You're on-call regularly, which means vacations get interrupted and your phone is never on silent. You've started mentoring the new junior who's exactly where you were five years ago.
