Sheet Metal Worker

You fabricate, install, and repair sheet metal products — mostly HVAC ductwork, but also roofing, siding, and custom metal pieces. It's hands-on work that bounces between a shop and job sites.

What Tuesday looks like

You start at 6:30 in the fabrication shop, reading a set of shop drawings for a commercial building's ductwork. You spend the morning at the plasma cutter and brake press, cutting and bending galvanized steel to spec. Your hands are cold because the shop's not heated well, and you nick your forearm on a sharp edge — you tape it and keep going. After lunch you load the truck and drive 40 minutes to the job site. You're up on a scissor lift hanging ducts from a ceiling grid, working around electricians who need the same space. By 3 PM your shoulders ache from holding pieces overhead. A duct doesn't fit because someone measured a wall wrong, so you cut and re-flange on the spot. You clock out at 4:30, dusty and tired. The work is real — you can point at it. The repetitive cuts and the cold shop mornings get old.

The first years

Apprentice Year 1–2

You're earning around $18–22/hr while attending classes a couple nights a week or every other week. Most of your day is grunt work: hauling material, sweeping the shop, holding the other end of a duct, and learning to read shop drawings without screwing up. You'll burn yourself on a TIG weld, mismeasure a piece and waste $80 of galvanized steel, and get chewed out for it. Your body is sore in places you didn't know existed.

Apprentice Year 3–4

Pay bumps to around $25–30/hr and you're trusted with real fabrication — running the brake press, plasma cutter, and shear without a journeyman watching every move. On site, you're hanging duct on your own and starting to troubleshoot fit issues. School is still grinding on — blueprint reading, HVAC theory, code. You're tired but you can finally point to entire systems and say you built that.

Journeyman (Year 5)

You've passed your final exam and you're a licensed journeyman making $58K–70K depending on region and overtime. You run your own small jobs, train apprentices, and the foreman starts asking your opinion on layout problems. The work is still cold mornings, overhead lifts, and tight crawlspaces — that doesn't change. But you're no longer the bottom of the food chain, and the paycheck reflects it.

The Fork (Year 6–7)

You're solid at the trade and have options. You can stay a field journeyman and chase overtime and per diem on big commercial jobs ($75K–90K with hours). You can push toward foreman or shop lead, which means more clipboard, less tools, and managing people who don't always show up. Or you can start side jobs — small residential ductwork, custom metal — with an eye on eventually going out on your own, which means buying a truck, tools, insurance, and chasing your own customers.

The gold-standard path: apply to a SMART (Sheet Metal Workers International) local union apprenticeship, where you earn a paycheck (starting around 40–50% of journeyman wage) while completing ~8,000 hours of on-the-job training plus classroom instruction. Competitive to get into — most locals require a high school diploma, basic math test, and sometimes a drug screen.

Non-Union (Open Shop) Apprenticeship

Sheet Metal Apprenticeship

3–4 years·Paid — sometimes lower starting wages than union

Run through contractor associations like ABC (Associated Builders and Contractors) or SMACNA-affiliated open shops. Easier to get into than union programs but typically pays less and benefits are weaker. Still a legitimate path to becoming a skilled sheet metal worker.
